Creative Writing Retreat at Rancho Las Cascadas Resort

Through exercises, workshops, lectures, one-on-one personalised tutorials, fieldwork and “serious play” in this amazing setting, Melvin and Lucy will introduce some of the key components for beginning, or developing, creative work. They will also discuss how to find an original voice. How to push boundaries, as well as how basic elements such as character, setting and plot can enliven and deepen a creative piece. Come prepared to experiment, begin new work, and open your mind to the fun of creative writing!

Although Melvin and Lucy are specialists in children’s and YA fiction, this creative writing retreat is suitable for writers of all forms, as well as those working on young people’s fiction. Working in a small group, this will be a specialist, intense and hugely enjoyable course, absolutely tailored to the group’s needs. Depending on the ability, and desires, of the group, Melvin and Lucy may also conduct some teaching and research activities in the field, perhaps even on horseback!

Melvin and Lucy are hugely experienced writers and teachers of Creative Writing. Melvin has published over twenty books, which have been nominated for all the most prestigious awards for young people’s fiction, and has frequently been called the “Godfather of YA” in Great Britain. In short, he is a living legend! Lucy has published three novels for young adults, as well as numerous short stories for young people and adults. She is Senior Lecturer on the prestigious Masters Course in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University, where she earned her own MA and PhD in Creative Writing. Lucy and Melvin are known as a bit of a ‘dream team’, developing a blossoming partnership of writing retreats all over the world. They are even writing their own book together!

Unlike most Creative Writing courses, Rancho Las Cascadas offers a luxury experience. Amazingly, this retreat includes absolutely everything (even excursions!). You just need to focus on YOU and YOUR writing and what you need for that, we’ll take care of the rest!

Melvin Burgess (born 25 April 1954) is a British writer of children's fiction. He became famous in 1998 with the publication of Junk, about heroin-addicted teenagers on the streets of Bristol. At least in Britain, Junk became one of the best-known young adult books of the decade.

Burgess won the annual Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book by a British author. For the 10th anniversary in 2007 it was named one of the top ten Medal-winning works, selected by a panel to compose the ballot for a public election of the all-time favourite.
