Between The Rides
One of the things I look forward to most when I visit the Rancho is the peacefulness of the early morning. Wiped out at the end of the day from all of the horseback riding, I usually head to bed early and rapidly fall into a deep and restful sleep. I wake up without prompt and have an hour or two to fill before breakfast. I love this time of the day.
There are an array of ways to fill these early hours, depending on mood. Sometimes I take a cup of tea and walk down to watch the horses in the pasture as the sun rises. It’s so quiet…all you hear is the sound of the horses munching on the hay. It’s surprisingly loud when the hustle and bustle of the work day is yet to come.
If I’m feeling energetic, I head out on a long walk or bike ride in the country to stretch a bit and loosen up my muscles. The Rancho is adding a fitness room with a few pieces of aerobic equipment, so that will be nice for a change of pace as well.
There are a lot of options available during the day for non-riders and those recuperating from riding hard! You can book guided hikes and bike rides and see the local landscape sans horse. Regular Yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation classes are held every morning. Hot Salsa Latin Dance classes are held in the afternoons. And there are a variety of daily excursions for those who want to immerse themselves in the local culture.
The spa has been upgraded recently. Luis, a chiropractor and registered massage therapist, has joined the staff. I have heard nothing but rave reviews from other guests and his workload seems to be ramping up quite quickly.
I can’t wait for the new temazcal (sweat lodge) to open. Rancho Las Cascadas has been bringing guests to a local sauna for years to experience this long-standing Mexican tradition, but soon guests will only have to walk about 100 feet to see what it’s all about.
It seems like every time I visit the Rancho, there is something new and wonderful. I still like to ride the horses all day every day, but my family and friends who accompany me really enjoy the variety of activities from which to choose. They’re able to taste the colors of Mexico without stress or strain. The staff is always wonderful and takes care of us, no matter our interests. I can’t wait for my next visit!
