Stretch Your Legs and Explore

I wake up early when I stay at the Ranch. The sun is usually shining through the window before 7:00 am and it wakes me from a peaceful and very restful sleep. Breakfast isn’t ready until 8:00 am, so there is plenty of time to get out and stretch my legs. I like to enjoy the quiet mornings with a walk, run, or bike ride – depending on my mood. Here are a few of the routes I follow if you’d like to wander from the Ranch a bit during your visit:

Walk or Run to San Agustin (about 5 km/3 miles – mas o menos!)

This route takes about 50 minutes round trip to walk at a very brisk pace. If you have the time, stop at the little store in the square, buy something to eat or drink, and then sit in the park next to the church to relax for a bit.

  1. Turn right out of the Ranch and follow the road to the “T”.
  2. Turn left at the “T” and continue straight – up the big hill.
  3. Take the first right (you have a choice of going straight to Soyaniquilpan or right to San Agustin – go right!).
  4. Shortly after you cross a little bridge, you will reach the town church, a little park, and the center of San Agustin (the little store to buy refreshments will be on your left – about 100 yards from the church).
  5. When ready, turn around and retrace your steps to the Ranch.

Walk or Run – a much flatter route (about 4 km/2.5 miles – mas o menos!)

This route takes about 40 minutes to walk if you’re moving quickly. It is a big circle and a much flatter course than the previous route…just in case your legs are soar from riding!

  1. Turn right out of the Ranch and follow the road to the “T”.
  2. Turn right at the “T”, cross the bridge and follow the road as it curves to the right and then to left. You should recognize this road – we ride the horses here all the time.
  3. The paved road will curve again to the left but there will also be a gravel road if you continue straight. Follow the gravel road and go straight.
  4. The gravel road will intersect with another paved road. Turn left here and continue straight.  Stay on the side and watch for cars as you walk/run.  It’s generally not too busy but you should pay attention to the traffic.
  5. Take a left at the first paved road. It does not intersect..it only goes to the left.
  6. Follow this paved road as it curves to the left. It will eventually curve to the right.  You should recognize this place from step #3 above.  From here you will be backtracking to the Ranch as you follow the road to the right.
  7. Again, the road will curve to the right, then to the left.
  8. Cross the little bridge and take the first road on your left that leads back to the Ranch.

Long Run or Bike Ride (about 8 km/5 miles – mas o menos!)

It takes me 50 minutes to bike this path at a casual pace.  Running times will vary based on your speed. It’s a relatively flat course, with just a few hills/inclines on the backside.  But if you want a harder workout, do the course backward and you’ll meet a killer hill on the front end!

  1. Turn right out of the Ranch and follow the road to the “T”.
  2. Turn right at the “T”, cross the bridge and follow the road as it curves to the right and then to left. You should recognize this road – we ride the horses here all the time.
  3. The paved road will curve again to the left – follow the curve.
  4. Continue on this same road (it will eventually curve right) until it ends. You must choose right or left.  Choose LEFT.
  5. Continue straight until the road ends at another “T”. Turn LEFT. At this point, you’ll see buildings on each side of the road.  You are on your way to the town center.
  6. Cross a small bridge and shortly thereafter you will see a road to your left – right before a big, empty parking lot. Turn left here.
  7. You will pass a little park and main church – both on your left. A bit later you will cross another small bridge.  Continue straight.
  8. The road will eventually curve to the left. Follow the curve, pass the cemetery (on your right) and stay on this road.  You’ll have to work a bit on a few smaller climbs, but take advantage of gravity as you make your way down the hills.  The last hill is a lot of fun and you’ll pick up a lot of speed on your bike…so just be careful!
  9. At the bottom of the big hill, turn right onto the road that leads to the Ranch (the road only goes to the left. If you miss it, you will cross over the little bridge mentioned in step #2 above).
