Planning a horseback riding vacation in Mexico is exciting, especially if you will be spending several days exploring the countryside from the saddle.

Knowing what to pack can make your trip much more comfortable so you can focus on enjoying the horses, the trails, and the experience.
The good news is that you don’t need to bring a lot. Most guests are surprised by how simple ranch life is. Comfortable clothing, a few essentials, and a sense of adventure are really all you need.
Understanding the Weather
One of the nice things about the area is the mild climate throughout the year. Around midday, temperatures are usually about 22°C (75°F), which makes it very pleasant for riding and spending time outdoors.
Mornings and evenings can feel a bit cooler, especially at the ranch’s elevation of around 7,500 feet (2,300 meters). Because of this, it’s a good idea to pack a few long-sleeved shirts, a light sweater, or a jacket that you can wear during early rides or after sunset.
Don’t be afraid to bring a bit of everything so you can stay comfortable in different temperatures.
Comfortable Riding Clothes
When packing for a horseback riding vacation, comfort is the most important thing.
Long pants are recommended for riding. Jeans are the most common choice because they protect your legs from the saddle and help prevent chafing during longer rides. Lightweight shirts or long sleeves also work well, especially when riding under the sun.
Layering is always a good idea so you can adjust as the day warms up.
Proper Footwear for Riding
Closed-toe footwear is essential around horses. For riding, we recommend jeans with short boots. Boots with a small heel help keep your foot secure in the stirrup and are much more comfortable during longer rides.
Trainers or sneakers are not ideal for riding, as they can sometimes slip too far into the stirrups and become uncomfortable. If you don’t already have riding boots, you can often find simple leather boots in local markets for around $45 to $50 depending on the size.
It’s also nice to bring a second pair of comfortable shoes to wear around the ranch after the rides.
Sun Protection
Because the ranch sits at a higher elevation, the sun can be quite strong even when the temperature feels comfortable. Wearing sunscreen with a high protection factor every day is strongly recommended. Please remember to bring sunscreen with you.
A good hat is also very helpful while riding. Many guests prefer to wear a traditional sombrero to protect their face and neck from the sun. Sombreros are commonly used by riders in the area and can also be found at local markets for around $15.
The ranch is regularly fumigated for mosquitoes, so there are usually very few around.
Riding Helmets
The ranch does not provide riding helmets. If you prefer to ride with one, it’s best to bring your own. Many riders here choose to wear hats or sombreros instead, especially because helmets can feel quite warm under the strong sun. Ultimately, this choice is up to each guest and their personal comfort.
Don’t Forget Your Swimsuit
Even though the focus of the trip is horseback riding, there is also plenty of time to relax. Bringing a swimsuit is a good idea if you would like to enjoy the swimming pool, or hot tub.
A Few Small Extras
A few simple items can make your stay even more enjoyable:
- Lip balm
- Sunglasses
- A reusable water bottle
- A small pack for personal items
- A camera or phone for photos on the trail
Many guests love capturing the beautiful countryside and the special moments spent with the horses.
Pack Light and Enjoy the Experience
Ranch life is relaxed and simple. You do not need fancy clothing or complicated gear. With comfortable riding clothes, good boots, and a few essentials, you will have everything you need for an unforgettable horseback riding vacation in Mexico.
Most importantly, come ready to enjoy the trails, the fresh mountain air, and the experience of exploring the countryside on horseback.
